Jean Monnet Module ENSUEU: "Environmental Sustainability in Europe: a socio-legal perspective"

A Jean Monnet Module is a short teaching course or programme in the field of European Union studies at a higher education institution. In 2017 the European Commission Executive Agency for Education, Audiovisual and Culture (EACEA) selected for EU co-funding the application of the University of Trieste (Italy) for a Jean Monnet Module entitled “Environmental Sustainability in Europe: a socio-legal perspective” (project ENSUEU: 587341-EPP-1-2017-1-IT-EPPJMO-MODULE). The duration of the project is three academic years, starting from year 2017/2018.

The successful application was submitted by Professor Serena BALDIN, as a Module Leader. The project team also includes Professor Andrea CRISMANI, Professor Giorgio OSTI and Professor Moreno ZAGO of the University of Trieste, and Professor Sara DE VIDO of the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice.

The Jean Monnet Module ENSUEU is designed to provide students with an introductory understanding of sustainable development with particular reference to the environmental pillar, taking into account both the EU perspective and the international scenario. It combines the teaching of legal principles and rules with a sociological explanation of the policies in this field of studies. The main objectives of the teaching staff will be to increase students’ knowledge of sustainable development and EU environmental law and policies, to promote their active participation through discussions and essay presentations, and to foster attendees’ trasversal skills, adding value to their curricula. This project will also allow for the training of legal practitioners, enhancing their professional expertise in EU studies, through the organisation of workshops.

Further to teaching activities, the project ENSUEU includes research and dissemination activities. The research outcome will be enshrined in an open access collective book published by Trieste University Press. Dissemination of the ENSUEU activities will be carried out among high school students and associations, and among academics and students of other Universities.
